Charybdis and Scylla were 2 monsters in Roman mythology that guarded the narrow straight between Italy and Sicily. Scylla was a multi-headed aquatic reptile, and Charybdis was a monster that lurked at the bottom of a whirpool. Sailors must sacrifice a few men to Scylla or risk losing their entire ship to Charybdis.

Potatoes

Anyone who's ever bought a bag of potatoes and forgotten about them knows that they sprout roots really quickly. Well, we had a bag with six potatoes that sprouted, so my boyfriend and I went out and planted them in the garden. We thought they were dead because they showed no signs of growth for a couple weeks, but recently the leaves popped up through the dirt. It looks like we'll have fresh potatoes after all. :D
